Quick answer
Changing a user code is usually done from the keypad using the master code, though the exact key sequence depends on your panel and keypad model. Check your user manual, or ask us to change codes for you. If nobody knows the master code, the alarm needs a takeover by a technician.
When to change your codes
- You’ve moved into a home or business with an existing alarm
- A staff member, tenant, cleaner or family member no longer needs access
- You think someone has seen your code
- You’re still using a default or simple code like 1234
How it generally works
Most panels have a master code that can add, change and delete user codes. On many keypads you enter the master code, go to the user codes menu, choose the user number and enter the new code twice. The exact key presses depend on your panel and keypad model, so follow the user manual for your system.
Never share the master code with everyone in the household or team. Give each person their own user code instead, so you can remove one person without changing everyone’s code.
If you don’t know the master code
If the master or installer code is unknown, a technician can take over the system, reset the codes and test every sensor. This is common when moving into a property with an existing Ness or Hills alarm.
Choosing a good code
- Avoid birthdays, addresses and simple patterns
- Use different codes for different people
- Remove codes as soon as someone no longer needs them
